Seasonal Programs

What are IDOT’s seasonal programs?

IDOT’s seasonal program staff members are not considered full-time permanent employees. However, those chosen for these programs have opportunities to expand and strengthen their professional backgrounds by building professional relationships and learning new skills in various job situations.

IDOT Summer Program (May-August)

The Summer Engineering Program gives engineering students opportunities for on-the-job training. Only students who have completed a minimum of one year (30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours credit) of college courses in engineering or related curriculum are eligible.

The Summer Non-Engineering (Technician Trainee) Program gives non-engineering students opportunities for on-the-job training. Eligibility extends to high school graduates, college students and college graduates who have completed college courses in areas other than engineering.

Note: Applications will only be accepted during the posting period.

IDOT Winter Technical Program (January-May)

The Winter Non-Engineering (Technician Trainee) Program gives non-engineering students opportunities to obtain on-the-job training.

Eligibility extends to high school graduates, college students and college graduates who have completed college courses in areas other than engineering.

Winter Snowbird Program (November-April)

The IDOT Winter Snowbird Program hires monthly and hourly licensed truck operators to assist in snow and ice removal during the winter months. Applicants must have a Class ‘A’ or ‘B’ CDL with N or X endorsement and meet all requirements of the job. IDOT typically posts for Snowbirds around mid-September.

Note: Traditionally, postings for the summer and winter programs are posted about a month before the program is scheduled to begin.
